Self-editing.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?
Write a rock opera.

What fictional place would you most like to visit?
Xanadu, definitely Xanadu. I mean, the Geddy Lee of Rush describes the river Alph, the caves of ice… it just sounds like the most peaceful place.

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what event would give you the best chance of winning a medal?
That’s a tough one. I excel at many things. Coping. Not the kind of coping you do when your favorite Netflix series wraps. No, the kind of coping you do for crown molding. You should see mine. Gold-medal craftsmanship.

What is the best part of your job?
6:00 p.m. No, seriously, it has to be the look of disbelief on a client’s face when I’ve engineered something they asked me to engineer on time and under budget. That look is the absolute best part of my job.

How did you get into engineering?
Pure, soul-crushing guilt. My grandfather was an engineer, my father was an engineer, and they brought the hammer of guilt down big-time when I grew a mullet and toured with my metal band. After 6 months, my dad handed me his sacred slide rule and said to me, “Son, go forth and engineer.”

What do you do for your job?
I am an engineer. I engineer things and work on engineering projects, sometimes with other engineers.
