10 Questions with Martin Liu

What do you do for your job?
I am an intern under the H&H team. I mainly work on developing scripts to help automate certain tasks or add functionality to existing scripts.

How did you get into engineering?
I started off as a CS major, but left as I wasn't super interested in understanding all the math behind it. However, I did enjoy applying what I learned and leaned towards engineering. Initially, civil engineering interested me, but then I started learning more about water resources and liked it a lot more!

What is the best part of your job?
Definitely the problem solving aspect. There are so many ways to go about solving a particular problem, and it's really satisfying when you find or learn about an even more efficient solution. Working with more experienced engineers has also opened me up to various tools and techniques that have helped with how I problem solve.

What hobby would you get into if time and money were not an issue?
Definitely learning more languages and ideally traveling to the country of that language. There are so many nuances in every language, which I find really fascinating.

What are you most looking forward to in the next 10 years?
I am looking forward to seeing where I'm at in the next 10 years! I know that's not answering the question, but I have no idea what's going to happen so just the mystery alone is enough for me to look forward to.

What question would you most like to know the answer to?
With the recent photos from James Webb, probably if there's intelligent life on other planets. The answer to me is likely yes, but having a definite answer would be great.

What is the luckiest thing that has happened to you?
Being able to study overseas! It's definitely an eye-opening experience studying in a completely different country, and while it's tough being so far from home, I've definitely learned a lot and have had an experience not many would be able to get.

What takes up too much of your time?
Eating. Controversial opinion, but if I could take a pill as a meal substitute I would do it. Regularly.

What skill would you like to master?
A front or back lever! They look really cool, but I am nowhere near strong enough to pull it off yet.

What fictional place would you most like to visit?
I am currently reading (or rather listening to) The Black Prism, so probably Little Jasper, which is where a good chunk of the story takes place.
